Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan and Suntory Beverage & Food to Implement Bottle-to-Bottle Horizontal Recycling of PET Bottles at Osaka Kansai Expo
Promoting Domestic Resource Recycling and a Circular Economy in Japan

Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Inc. (“Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan”) and Suntory Beverage & Food Limited (“Suntory”) will collaborate on a “bottle-to-bottle” horizontal recycling initiative at EXPO 2025 OSAKA, KANSAI, JAPAN (“Osaka Kansai Expo”), which opens on Sunday April 13, 2025. This initiative will recycle used PET bottles collected at 3R Stations (Note 1) installed at the Expo venue into new beverage bottles for Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan and Suntory. 
 

 Used PET bottles collected at the 45 “3R Stations” within the venue will be recycled into new beverage bottles for Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan and Suntory. Bottle-to-bottle horizontal recycling enables continuous reuse of PET bottles as a resource without the need for new fossil-derived raw materials, reducing CO₂ emissions per bottle by approximately 60% compared to producing PET bottles from new fossil-derived materials. This initiative contributes to the realization of a circular economy and a decarbonized (carbon neutral) society, as promoted by the Osaka Kansai Expo.

To promote efficient bottle-to-bottle recycling, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan and Suntory have installed dedicated PET bottle-collection boxes at these 3R Stations and created a system with the Japan Expo Association whereby PET bottles bodies, caps, and labels can be sorted. The bottle body box insert slots will display resource circulation awareness logos from both companies to encourage Expo visitors from Japan and abroad to understand and support horizontal recycling of used PET bottles.

The Osaka Kansai Expo aims to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are targeted for completion by 2030. To support this, the Expo is committed to responsibly managing environmental and social impacts and operating as a sustainable event. From the planning stage, the Expo has engaged in the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) by minimizing daily waste generated at the venue through Reduce and Reuse, followed Recycling of correctly separated resources.

This initiative is being implemented with the expectation that the expertise gained by Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan and Suntory through bottle-to-bottle horizontal recycling will play a key role in advancing a circular economy and a decarbonized (carbon neutral) society that the Osaka Kansai Expo aims to promote.

Recycling boxes will be installed at 50 locations throughout the venue for sorting into 10 categories including PET bottles, caps, cans/glass bottles, papers, and other recyclable materials.
