Sorting and recycling waste material that is produced in manufacturing is emphasized in all plants, and we have achieved continuous zero emissions (recycling more than 99% of all waste material).
Especially in terms of coffee and tea waste, which compose a large portion of all waste produced, 100% is recycled into animal feed and fertilizer.

Utilization of recycled products

Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan uses recycled materials in various parts of the operations.
The uniforms worn by plant staff are made of materials recycled from PET bottles (each uniform uses seven to eight PET bottles worth of recycled textile). Also, carpets, towels, pens, and numerous other products made with recycled from PET bottles are used within the plants.

Steel cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, PET bottles, and other packages collected from the collection boxes are sorted and recycled according to package type.

To Help Create a World Without Waste “2030 packaging vision”

Based on a global plan announced by The Coca-Cola Company in the US on Jan 19, 2018 with an aim to help create a World Without Waste, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Inc. has been working on activities made up of 3 pillars below for achieving”2030 packaging vision” with 2030 as the goal.

■ Raw materials:We do not use exhaustible resources of petroleum-based materials to make PET bottles as much as possible. We aim to make bottles with an average of 50% recycled content per bottle by moving forward adoption of recycled or plant-based PET as packaging materials.

■ Recycle:We will work on building a more robust packaging collection & recycling scheme as well as maintaining them together of the government, local administrations, beverage industry and local communities to further help raise the collection and recycling rate of PET bottle and can domestically. We aim to collect and recycle the same amount of our product packages sold in Japan.

■ Coordination with partners:We will work on beautification of local communities through cleanup activities. We will also proactively join awareness-raising activities on packaging litter and marine debris. As a member of communities, we will continue to assume our responsibilities through coordination with wide range of partners including environmental protection groups.

<PlantBottle>

Next-generation PET bottle, part of which is made from plants. It is the domestically manufactured PET bottle partially using plant-derived materials (5-30%) with minimized dependency on non-recyclable material of petroleum which makes it possible to recycle 100% at existing PET bottle recycling plants just like traditional PET plastic. Developed by THE COCA-COLA COMPANY in the US, PlantBottle has been introduced as a global initiative and made inroads to Japanese market since 2010.

Compared to our conventional products, it can be calculated that 100 million bottles enable a car with normal fuel economy (10km/L t)to drive more than 90 times around the Earth(based on the assumption that 1 circle of the earth is 40,000 km).(*2)

Recycling vending machines

We recycle all vending machines that are taken out of service for disposal.
Such vending machines are collected at our company’s facilities such as “Kita Kyushu Sawayaka Recycling Center”, dismantled and sorted according to waste material type, and the chlorofluorocarbon is appropriately disposed.
