FV Japan's “Cool Touch Mask” Wins Award at the 17th Glass Bottle Awards

Jun 14, 2021

The Cool Touch Mask sold in the vending machines of FV Japan, a Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan group company, won the Function/Environment Award at the 17th Glass Bottle Awards.

■The Birth of the Cool Touch Mask
FV Japan began test sales of the Cool Touch Mask in July 2020. More than a mere mask, it is sold in vending machines and refrigerated alongside the other soft drinks.
Currently, the wearing of masks is one of the safety practices recommended to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and this project was born from FV Japan’s idea to make masks more accessible to consumers by selling them in their own soft drink vending machines.

■The Best Container for Selling Masks
During planning, many were concerned that the mask itself is too light and would not dispense properly if sold in a soft drink vending machine. Thus, a glass bottle was chosen for its tight seal and suitable weight It was also noted that the use of glass bottles as containers provides more versatility while taking hygiene into account.

■From test sales to expanding the area of operations
Once the container was decided upon, FV Japan began their test sales of Cool Touch Masks on July 22, 2020 (Wed.) in vending machines deployed by FV Japan in Sunshine City, Toshima-ku, Tokyo. The use of vending machines has made it possible to provide masks without any face-to-face human contact during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since September 2020, a total of 22 units have been deployed in Tokyo, Gunma, Aichi, and Fukuoka prefectures (as of September 2020).

■ FV Japan Won the Glass Bottle Award for Function/Environment
In late April of 2021, we received the good news that the bottled Cool Touch Mask had won the Function/Environment Award at the Glass Bottle Awards. Hosted by the Glass Bottle Association (Chairman: Hisatsugu Ishizuka), the Glass Bottle Awards evaluate glass bottles that are used in various scenes in life from a variety of perspectives of not only function, environment, and design but also trend and lifestyles, as well as to recognize good glass bottles chosen from a diversified and comprehensive standpoint, with individual awards set up for each member of the screening committee.

The product was highly evaluated for: “The unique idea of putting a mask, which has become an essential item, in a glass bottle of suitable weight and selling it in a vending machine. The mask is cooled directly to achieve a refreshing feeling and put into a glass bottle with excellent sealing performance to enhance the feeling of cleanliness and peace of mind."

The awards ceremony was held at FV Japan to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On the day of the ceremony, the Senior Managing Director of the Japan Glass Bottle Association, Mr. Shigeki Yoshinaga, presented FV Japan with a certificate and a plaque.
