Akashi Mega DC launch! - Interview with the plant personnel on the launch

July 12, 2022

On May 27, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan held a completion ceremony for Akashi Mega DC, built on the grounds of Akashi Plant (Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture), which is an automated logistics center with the largest storage and shipping capacity in the Coca-Cola System in Japan. Operation of Akashi Mega DC kicked off on July 12.

Serving as a logistics hub for Osaka and Hyogo prefectures, Akashi Mega DC has the largest storage capacity (ca. 60,000 pallets) and shipping capacity (ca. 80 million cases/year) in the Coca-Cola system in Japan. Automation and digitization have been promoted to reduce the time required for outbound shipping and operation by workers. We are building an end-to-end network from production to delivery to the customers and vending machines, etc., for timely distribution of our products.

We interviewed I-san of Mega DC Operation Section about his thoughts on the launch of Akashi Mega DC.

---What are your honest thoughts on the launch of Akashi Mega DC?

"It's finally time! We're going to do it!!" - That's how all the members feel. Our organization was formed last year, and we have been testing new systems and equipment in phases, but finally the entire center will begin operation. All the members are alert and focused.

---How is the atmosphere in the team?

It's very lively. Of course, there's the pressure of a big project, but the Center Manager is a very cheerful person and guides the atmosphere of the team in a positive direction. Everyone is positively engaged with a good amount of tension as well.

---Various automated facilities have been implemented in Akashi Mega DC. Is there one that you particularly recommend?

It has to be the "mixed palletizing robot". It's a facility with a robot arm that automatically picks products of different sizes to a single pallet. Akashi Mega DC has 20 installed, and it's impressive to see all arms working at once!

-- What do you want to achieve in Akashi Mega DC?

Our goal for Akashi Mega DC is to be able to fulfill all our customers' orders and requests, 365 days a year.

There are many challenges, but we will make sure that we all continue to evolve and work together as one team to realize this goal with the best team effort!!

Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan is working to build a "high-quality, low-cost, and stable" supply chain with "balanced and continuous improvements". With the launch of Akashi Mega DC in July 2022, we will continue to strive to build an optimal logistics system that can respond quickly to the diverse needs of our customers.
